Before & After Dental Crowns

Benefits of a crown

A tooth with a large filling has a high risk of cracking and splitting. The cracks can be so severe that a sudden break can even result in tooth loss. A crown acts as a shield to the biting force; protecting the tooth.

Teeth with big fillings are difficult to mould to the correct shape and colour in the mouth. A crown made by a dental technician will fit the tooth better and its appearance and biting function will be improved.

A crown can used for a single tooth or for many teeth to improve your smile much like dental porcelain veneers.

How long do crowns last?

Once bonded to the teeth, crowns are very strong. The average life span of a crown is 10-15 years and even then, may only need to be changed for cosmetic reasons if the edge of the crown shows due to gum recession. It is easy to forget that biting force is incredibly strong and even natural teeth can crack and chip so a crown can also break sooner if it undergoes too much biting pressure.
